Walmart Rumored to Launch Netflix Competitor Under its Vudu Brand Soon

According to the report, now the Walmart is gearing up to compete with the Hulu, Amazon, and Netflix in the streaming video space with an offering of its own which is already branded under the name of Vudu. However, the services would almost be similar to some other streaming services by combining a mix of licensed content with some original videos. It might cost about $8 a month.

Though it’s not very clear about how Vudu plans to distinguish itself from existing companies, many have been shifted their resources towards the original content production as big rights holders like Disney, ESPN, and some others have started launching the streaming services of their own. At this moment, the Vudu will surely do something which is more as an iTunes and also an Amazon Video competitor in the recent movie rental market that offering around 150,000 titles to buy or rent with a much more limited selection which is available for free as a part of its ad-supported Movies. In 2010 when the Walmart purchased the services, and since it has also moved away from developing its own set-top boxes, in the smart TV market, Vudu is a very well-known name. Though it usually exists as a preinstalled application on some streaming hardware and also smart TVs.

Recently, Vudu does have the relationships with some large Hollywood studios and also with the television networks. So it is very practical that the company could use those relationships only to cut the streaming deals, and the report stated that the Walmart has already reached out for discussing the streaming video services with the media partners. It seems to be very clear that the Walmart wants to vie with the Amazon and also with its Prime subscription service, which funds more than 100 million of the Amazon customers a considerable streaming library as it is a part of the $119 annual subscription. And recently, the Walmart’s service has a very planned launch in an upcoming fourth quarter of 2018.
